Stage Crew: -PARENTS, please read this page with your children-
Stage crew is specifically for students who are really interested in backstage or technology aspects of theater. Please, if you really want to be a character onstage, think about joining the cast instead! Many students have joined stage crew in the past, and then wished they auditioned for the cast instead. If you are worried about acting in front of an audience, part of our club will be learning how to be less nervous on stage!
We love stage crew members at Drama Club though. If you are sure that backstage and technology are what you really like about theater... then keep reading!
Any student who wishes to help on stage crew for Shrek the Musical Jr. must complete an online SeeSaw "audition". For details on how to access the correct Drama Club page in SeeSaw, see below. In your "audition" video, please explain which stage crew position interests you the most, and why you think you would be a good fit for that position (positions listed below). Some positions are limited, so please have a back-up position in mind too!
Because we are in the process of finding an Assistant Director to work with the Stage Crew, their exact rehearsal dates have not been set yet. Some positions on the crew will be needed more often than others. To double check the rehearsal schedule, click here.
As a stage crew member, it is acceptable to have some conflicts (days where you cannot attend rehearsal because you have something else already planned). However, Mr. Quiñones must know what these dates would be by Sunday, March 2nd. Please include every conflict in the parent email to Mr. Q (details below). If you have too many conflicts, you will not be able to join stage crew. Please note: All stage crew members must be available to attend every rehearsal during Tech Week (the week before performances). They must also be available for every performance.
That being said- as mentioned above, the stage crew will not be needed at every single rehearsal. There will be many days when only the cast is needed, and some when both cast and crew are needed. If a stage crew member has too many "unexcused" absences (missing rehearsal or leaving early on a day the crew is called- exceptions being emergencies, illness, or an approved conflict), they may lose their role on the stage crew.
If you are interested in auditioning to be in the cast instead, click here.
Available Stage Crew Positions:
Stage Manager- needed at almost every rehearsal. The director's best friend! This position is meant for a student willing to try really hard! The student stage manager is responsible for:
helping the director organize props (figuring out what props we need, and how to make them)
helping the director organize the set (figuring out when set changes happen, and who is going to move the set pieces in between scenes)
Being backstage during the shows to help other stage crew members and cast members know which scenes are next
Always knowing what is going on so you may act as a leader for other stage crew members
Playing Music tracks on the iPad at rehearsals
And more.
Lights Manager- needed every once in a while, but needed at every rehearsal once the lights are set up! The Lights Manager will work with the director to design the lights for each scene, and decide which scenes need the spotlights. They will control the lights from the light-board.
Sound Manager- needed every once in a while, but needed at every rehearsal once the microphones are set up! The sound manager is responsible for helping the director decide which characters need microphones, and will work with the adult in charge of controlling the microphone levels during the show from an iPad.
Running Crew- Needed every once in a while to plan set changes with the stage managers. Once we have a complete set, they will be needed more often. The running crew is responsible for working with the Stage Manager to move set pieces during rehearsals and performances.
Other- Other stage crew positions include stage manager assistants, sound assistants, and light assistants.
Details on how to access SeeSaw and how what to include in your parent email:
Confirm that the student has permission to join the Drama Club.
Confirm that both parents and the student have read, understand, and agree to each item in the Drama Club Contract (click here to access). The contract should also be printed, signed, and submitted to Mr. Quinones in person.
Confirm the student's availability to attend every rehearsal (to view the master schedule, click here). If a student will have to miss a rehearsal or leave early from any rehearsal, these conflicts must be listed in this email as well. If your child does not have any conflicts, please include that as well.
*Please note: This email should be the first step of the audition process. This year's audition videos must be submitted on the Caroline Street Drama Club SeeSaw page. While your child does have access to SeeSaw, they cannot currently access this particular page yet. Mr. Quiñones will manually add each student to this SeeSaw page, once he receives and reads the official parent permission email.
An email that does not include each of the three criteria above will delay your child's access to the official SeeSaw page, as Mr. Quinones will follow up and request further information. (It may take up to two days for your child to be added to the Drama Club SeeSaw page after a complete email is sent.)
Videos submitted to any other SeeSaw page (i.e. their classroom page, their Music page) will not be accepted. Please double check that your child is submitting their audition to the "Caroline Street Drama Club 2025 (Shrek The Musical, JR.)" SeeSaw page under the "Crew Interviews" assignment.
2. A Student video: Please explain which stage crew position interests you the most, and why you think you would be a good fit for that position (positions listed above). Some positions are limited, so please have a back-up position in mind too!
3. As a reminder, please print, sign, and submit a Drama Club contract to Mr. Quinones by Monday, March 3rd.
*If accepted into the stage crew, there will be a tuition to help support the cost of costumes, props, club t-shirts, and the cast and crew party. The cost is $65 for cast members and $50 for crew members. This cost will not prevent anyone from participating in the club, and no payment will be necessary until after the cast and crew list is announced. PTA-sponsored scholarships are available.
